I was amused by Andy Thomas’ column extolling the virtues of “peppy” Peggy Crutchfield’s candidacy for the General Assembly. He chastises Gen. Thurman for “not getting to know Peggy Crutchfield.” Frankly, I’m waiting to hear what she has done and what are her qualifications to represent Moore County, other than being “peppy.” I didn’t know that was a criterion to unseat a man who has served Moore County admirably for 14 years. Richard Morgan has been there for the citizens of Moore County and has gotten results. He helped the town of Carthage get turn lanes installed. He helped the homeowners of Seven Lakes get reduced speed limits. He worked to get aesthetically pleasing signage at the Pinehurst traffic circle. Richard stopped the expansion of commercial swine operations in Moore County. He has obtained numerous state and federal grants for Moore County. He helped to repeal the intangibles tax in 1995. His efforts and work with state and federal agencies have solved numerous problems for the citizens of Moore County. These are just a few of his accomplishments in the legislature. Other than being “peppy,” what does Ms. Crutchfield bring to the party? Can she accomplish more for Moore County than the co-speaker? Personally, I am not willing to sacrifice Richard’s experience and legislative abilities for a virtual unknown. I am also not willing to let a small group of discontented Republicans from Wake County influence the election in Moore County. Let’s keep “Moore County First.” Robert E. Tweed Pinehurst
