Stick With Experience

Your issue of April 18 contained a full-page advertisement paid for by a Committee opposing the re-election of Speaker Richard Morgan, our present representative in the N.C .House. This ad lists many of the past personal accomplishments of their candidate.

Missing in this list is any reference to that candidate’s experience in government at any level, so we have to infer that she has no experience in local government, no experience in county government, and no experience in state government. Speaker Morgan, on the other hand, is serving his seventh term in the House, which equals to almost 14 years of legislative experience in helping to successfully run our state. He served with distinction in all his assignments, has always been a credit to Moore County, and has worked his way up from being a back-bencher when he was first elected to being a leader among the 120 representatives in the House.

It appears to be utter nonsense to suggest that Moore County eliminate the proven leadership and the hard-earned experience of our present representative and instead send to the House a neophyte in government, who will have to start as another back-bencher with no recognition nor valuable contacts, to be lost in a sea of political competition as each of the 120 representatives seeks to obtain for their constituency the most favorable treatment.

I believe that each of the 120 representatives is paid an equal salary by the taxpayers of this state. Would it make economic sense for the voters of Moore County to hire a neophyte as their representative when for the same salary they can get one with 14 years of experience plus an established group of colleagues and valuable acquaintances serving in high places within the state government? I think not!
