I must correct misstatements by Rep. Morgan regarding our resolution for his removal from the Executive Committee of the N.C. Republican Party. He speaks of “outside intervention” in his Moore County. How we wish that this were a Moore County matter. Unfortunately, it is a North Carolina problem, since Co-Speaker Morgan has control of the legislative process. He has voted with the Democrats for a billion-dollar tax increase, hundreds of millions in incentives to outside businesses, and an unconstitutional redistricting plan, which punishes Republicans, while favoring Democrats. In the deal for co-speaker, Morgan made Black an offer he couldn’t refuse: sole control of only four of 31 committees to the Republicans, but sole control of 14 of the 31 to the Democrats, including the all- important Rules Committee, which determines which bills are considered. Therefore, Republican bills, such as the Informed Consent Bill for women considering abortion, languish in committee, while Democrats’ bills move forward. The nominee for speaker for whom 55 of the 60 House Republicans voted, Rep. George Holmes, would have insisted on equal power. Morgan will not even recognize, for debate or comment, some Republican legislators from across the state, preventing our representatives from doing their jobs. “Outside intervention”? A Moore County matter? We in the rest of the state beg to differ. As to Morgan’s “Republican credentials,” he, with Democrats Black and Basnight, is suing our party! The resolution to remove Morgan is ours, not Rep. Daughtry’s. I have not communicated with Rep. Daughtry in several years. This conflict is between Morgan and the 1.2 million voters, a clear majority, who voted Republican in 2002, but were cheated out of a Republican majority in the legislature. Hopefully, the good voters of Moore County will recognize the disservice Rep. Morgan has done to the N.C. Republican Party and to our great state. Judy Keener Raleigh |
