Cobey Expresses Outrage Over Unconstitutional Lines
Bill Cobey, who has been a leader of the forces challenging the N.C. legislature’s unconstitutional redistricting maps, vowed to continue the fight “as long as it takes” in order to make sure that the people of North Carolina get fair, balanced and constitutional maps.

“At some point the people of North Carolina are going to get fed up with this foolishness and throw all the legislators out on their ear,” said Cobey. “I know of no other state in the country that can’t even do the most basic of tasks without violating constitutional criteria. Many of the legislative leaders are banking on the idea that voters don’t pay any attention to redistricting, and they think they can do whatever they want with their backroom deals. Enough is enough.”

Cobey noted that the new lines passed by the North Carolina House are particularly egregious in both their dubious constitutionality, and in their basic level of unfairness to Republican voters. “North Carolinians have an appreciation for basic fairness and common sense,” said Cobey. “These maps, especially the house map, don’t contain any level of either.”

Cobey then took aim at what he termed the “failed leadership” in the House of Representatives. “Why do people run for office in the first place? Is it to make North Carolina a better place? Or is it simply to amass personal power and fight petty battles with their enemies? Public service needs to be far more important than that! I am particularly embarrassed for the Republicans in the House who participated in this charade. I know that they are basically good people, I just can’t imagine what they were thinking.

“In my travels to 50 North Carolina counties this year I have been encouraged to be reminded once again that people are demanding the public service must not descend into self service,” said Cobey.
