Toomey for U.S. Senate WWW.PATTOOMEY.ORG FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Joe Sterns (610) 439-6330 April 14, 2004 Toomey Joins Bush As Target of Billionaire George Soros Liberal Democrat activist funnels money to groups supporting Kerry, Specter; Toomey Campaign calls on Specter to renounce support from anti- Republican force ALLENTOWN-Billionaire liberal Democrat activist George Soros has two prime targets in the 2004 election: President George W. Bush, and Congressman Pat Toomey, who is vying to unseat 23-year liberal incumbent Senator Arlen Specter in the Republican Primary election April 27. "This is a loud, piercing wake up call to Republicans in Pennsylvania and across America that a billionaire liberal Democrat is dedicating considerable money and resources to bringing a liberal agenda into the Republican Party," said Toomey spokesman Joe Sterns. "Their goal is to stack the deck in favor of an overall liberal agenda for America in 2004. Republicans must not allow themselves to be influenced by groups with deceitful names such as the 'Republican Mainstreet Partnership,' whose simple goal is to make the GOP as liberal as possible." An article by the Associated Press noted that Soros has given the Republican Mainstream Partnership, which is doing everything it can to help liberal Arlen Specter defeat conservative Congressman Pat Toomey, a sum of $50,000 (Jordan, April 13). The Washington Post has reported that "Soros and a partner dedicated up to $5 million to MoveOn.org, a liberal activist group, bringing to $15.5 million the total of his personal contributions to oust [President] Bush (Blumenfeld, Nov.11, 2003). Soros has previously contributed thousands of dollars directly to Specter's campaign coffers. "Specter has a very disturbing relationship with liberal individuals and organizations," Sterns said. "The Toomey Campaign calls on Arlen Specter to do the honorable thing and denounce George Soros' effort to defeat President Bush and taint the Republican Part with liberalism by pumping money into front groups such as the 'Republican Main Street Partnership'," Sterns said. "No real Republican group would be associated with George Soros." Earlier in the campaign, Specter received sizable cash contributions from Democrat power-brokers Jack Valenti and Harold Ickes Jr., who helped navigate Bill Clinton through the impeachment process. Specter has been endorsed in the Senate race by the PA AFL-CIO and the PSEA, the state's largest teachers' union. The AFL-CIO's two largest and most politically potent unions - the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) - have contributed thousands of dollars to Specter's campaign to help him stave off the powerful challenge from Congressman Toomey. A letter to rank and file members of the Transportation Communications International Union from their leadership ask them to switch parties to tilt the outcome of the Toomey-Specter race. "You can switch from Democrat to Republican temporarily and then switch right back after the primary," the letter stated. # # # |
