Dave's Picks - Tuesday, May 6, 2014 Republican Primary Election (Wake County, NC)
Dear friends,
I pray that your conscience will be your guide while voting in the May 6, 2014 primary election.
I also pray that we can all be polite and charitable, remembering always
that "the tongue (or keyboard) is a flame..." [James 3:5]
To view your sample ballot & check your polling place for the primary election, visit:
http://www.ncsbe.gov/webapps/voter_search_public/
(Enter your name, County, etc., then click on "Search," then click on your name. Your polling place is shown. Click the link
to the right of "5/6/2014 PRIMARY" to see your sample ballot.)
The Wake County, NC Republican Party has a spreadsheet with web sites and email addresses for all
the local Republican candidates, here:
http://www.wakegop.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/2014-Republican-Candidates.pdf
Also, UNC-TV has a full (or nearly full) list of NC offices and candidates, with links to the candidates'
web sites, here:

These are my recommendations for the May 6, 2014 Republican Primary. I've attempted to
identify the wisest and most conservative candidates, with the best chances of winning in
November, and the best prospects of representing us effectively when they are in office.
(I'm sorry, but I have no recommendations for the Democratic Primary.)
This advice is probably worth at least what you paid for it:
- US Senate - Thom Tillis is the strongest conservative candidate. Tillis, Harris & Grant
are all sensible, sane conservative candidates, and I think either Tillis or Grant would have a good chance
of beating Democrat Kay Hagan in November. I support Tillis because of his proven track record of working
effectively for conservative reforms in a parliamentary body about the same size as the U.S. Senate (120 vs.
100 Members). The other leading Republican candidates are all political novices, though Grant & Harris are
pretty impressive on the campaign trail. (Brannon is by far the weakest candidate, and the least conservative,
of the eight NC Republicans seeking to replace Democrat Kay Hagan in the U.S. Senate; if you want to know
why I think so, click here.)
- US House, NC 2nd Congressional District - Frank Roche is perhaps the more conservative choice. (Incumbent Renee Ellmers is a nice lady, and a person of integrity, who has generally done a pretty good job, except that she opposed the NC Marriage Amendment.)
- US House, NC 4th Congressional District - Paul Wright is unopposed in the Republican Primary for this hopelessly lopsided district, so he won't appear on the May 6 Primary ballot
- US House, NC 13th Congressional District - incumbent George Holding is doing an excellent job, and he's unopposed in the primary, so he won't appear on the May 6 Primary ballot
- NC Senate District 15 - Dr. Jim Fulghum is our strongest Republican candidate in this "swing" district
- Wake County Commissioner District 1 - incumbent Joe Bryan is doing a good job
- NC Supreme Court - Jeanette Doran (but Eric Levinson is also a good man)
- Wake County District Attorney - Jeff Cruden (but I've also heard good things about Jefferson Griffin)
- Wake County Clerk of Superior Court - Barbara Moore
Please feel free to call or email me to discuss any of these (or anything else).
